Utility Customers Targeted by Text Message Scam

November 8, 2017

A number of local utilities have been reporting a new text scam targeting electricity customers. While we have not yet heard reports of this scam affecting our customers, be aware that this scam appears to be active in the surrounding area.

The scam involves electricity customers receiving a text message from individuals claiming to represent a local electricity distribution company. The text informs the customer that they have a refund on their account and instructs them to follow a link to receive an e-Transfer.

Customers are reminded that Halton Hills Hydro does not communicate with customers via text message. If you receive one of these text messages, do not click on the link or respond to the message.
If you have any questions about your account, please call our office at 519-853-3701.

If you receive a fraudulent phone call or text, you can report the scam to the police or to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or info@antifraudcentre.ca.
